Puerto Rico -
Third World Congress
on Tourism & the Environment

The World Congresses on Tourism For the Environment were interactive meetings designed to bring together leaders from around the world in conservation, travel, government, science, and the communities affected by tourism.  Organized by the Jacana Trust, and coordinated by Egret Communications, these meetings were designed to bring these groups into open discussion so that travel can directly contribute to the protection of natural and cultural resources and so that tourism can be developed and operated more sustainably.

The Third World Congress on Tourism for the Environment (in Puerto Rico ) brought together representatives from more than 40 nations, to discuss sustainable tourism development and the reduction of impacts from conventional tourism.  This unique meeting featured field seminars spread across the island, focusing on such diverse topics as Limiting Impacts on Sensitive Environments, Tourism Inside Refuges, Protected Areas and Development, Visitors and Sea Turtles, Greening Traditional Hotel Operations, and Sensitive Tourism in Subterranean Environments.  The World Congress had significant impact on Puerto Rico .  The Governor, the Director of Tourism, and the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, in presentations to the congress, committed to reduce impacts from existing tourism and to tie tourism's growth to environmental stewardship.  Partnerships forged in the process of developing the congress continue to tie various agencies, NGO's, and private sector interests together to work toward sustainable solutions.
