Inca Trail Clean-up Campaign
The Inca Trail to the World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu is used by visitors from around the world.  The three to five day trek is undertaken by thousands of visitors each dry season.  Without proper facilities and management, the trail has been subject to extreme visitor impacts.  Untrained visitors were damaging valuable natural and archaeological resources and human litter was seriously threatening the health of both visitors and local populations.  Working with a consortium of public and private entities and the government of Peru , the team developed a campaign designed to change behavior patterns of visitors and to influence a proposed management plan for the resource.  At the heart of the campaign was "A SACRED JOURNEY: The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu", a four projector multi-image production that featured a special group of US travelers cleaning up debris left behind by less sensitive tourists.  The production and campaign have been widely heralded as some of the founding efforts of conservation travel and sustainable tourism.
