La Ruta del Café Overview
Concept: Development of coffee-related tourism experiences in the coffee producing communities of Mexico and Central America.  The approach will yield a tourism product similar to wine country tourism in the Pacific Northwest and California .
Benefits:
  • Coffee tourism will augment the economies of coffee growing communities, helping shield them from unpredictable world coffee prices
  • Experiences in coffee producing communities and on site tasting of Central America’s fine coffees will build a constituency for Central America's coffees and the businesses that sell directly to consumers
  • Interaction between visitors and coffee communities will increase rapport between Central and North America, promote understanding and respect, and improve regional perception
  • Key coffee related tourism products can enhance the relationship between coffee producers and international coffee professionals
  • Coffee tourism will become a “deliverable” tourism experience to broaden the tourism offerings of host nations and regions
  • Coffee tourism will, often, be packaged with natural, cultural, and soft adventure tourism experiences in the host countries and regions
  • Stabilization of coffee economics will enable coffee producing regions to improve environmental stewardship
Organizational Structure:
  • Not for profit organization
    • To be registered in US, Canada, Mexico and throughout Central America
    • Board of Directors
      • International Advisory Board
      • Management Team
    • Project partnerships for development of coffee related tourism in target coffee growing regions of Mexico and Central America
Coffee Growing Regions:

Coffee is grown from Oaxaca and Chiapas in Mexico through Central America to Panama.  The higher altitude areas with key soil and climatic conditions in Mexico and Central America support the production of higher quality hard bean Arabica coffee.

The region has long produced much of the world coffee volume, providing dried unroasted beans to wholesalers for worldwide distribution.  In recent years, with the development demand for gourmet coffee, high quality coffees from Oaxaca, Mexico; Antigua, Guatemala; and Tarrazú, Costa Rica have begun to gather attention for quality.

Appreciation: La Ruta del Café is grateful for collaborative and material assistance from the Organization of American States, the Costa Rica Tourism Board, Los Santos Chamber of Tourism, Grupo Latino Americano del Exportadores, Egret Communications, and DM Russell Consulting during the early phases of this project.
